amberica west

Wonder what the exact weather is that you are seeing? Here it is!

The camera taking this picture is an Axis 213 PTZ. It is positioned on top Amberica West in a protective covering purchased from Security Ideas. The housing is the type that is seem at intersections that have video surveillance. Setting up was not particularly hard (but on the other hand, I would not classify it as easy.) We choose Axis 213 PTZ because of the image quality and ease of installation. While you 'pay' for this, it is by far the way to go - this is one of those cases is "you get what you pay for".

We have cable modem here with a fairly fast up and down load. The cable modem has a floating IP number but in actual fact, this IP number has never changed! With an Axis camera, I gave it a fake IP number (easy to do with their software and instructions.). The camera and computers are linked behind a LinkSys router. I have the port set to 8081.

The router has internal commands, so using Netscape I changed the configuration internally so that an incoming packet to the cam would be rerouted to the actual cam and not the main computer. To be exact, on the router:

  • Enable the IPSec Pass Through (Filters)
  • Enable the PPTP Pass Through (Filters)
  • On Forwarding give it the IP address and check TCP Protocol and UDP Protocol
  • DMZ Host: Give it the computers IP address
  • Give it the User Defined WAN MAC Address

Run the appropraite Cat-5 cables from the camera to the router and keep your fingers crossed.

Good luck,

Doug Lundberg
