BALTIC AMBER

This page is different from the other pages. Please note that while all the other pages have amber from the Dominican Republic, this page has amber from the Baltic area. Bottom line, everything on this page is Baltic amber. Take a look at the bottom of this page - there are some very new specials.

We now have a new page of weekly Baltic amber specials - real sale prices! Check it out.

1. This is a rare piece. First there is a twig (or the remains of a twig) going through the amber. But much more importantly, there is a Bristletail, Apterygota, Zygentoma. These are wingless true insects. This particular one is fairly good sized. A superb example of a Bristletail in Baltic amber.

2. I will admit that this is a small piece of amber - but boy is it cool. There is a female worker ant, Hymenoptera, Formicidae and part of a plant. I particularly like the plant - it is fun.

3. Here is the interesting Ichneumonid wasp. These are the wasps that lay their eggs inside a host.
The eggs eat the host (alive) form the inside out. When they hatch, the host dies. These are not common in amber.

4. How fun this piece is. This has a real coprolite in it the amber. Coprolites areanimal poop. This one, I think is from an Annelid (Annelida). One can never be 100% sure unless the actual animal is there - and in this case 'he' is not. Anyway, a very rare item in amber, enjoy.

5. Do we have a treat for you. This is a honey bee. They are almost impossible to find in Baltic amber - and this one is in such good shape and it is just plain fun to go through all these images. Just a super piece with even some other insects - but they pale at the mention of a honey bee, Hymenoptera, Apidae. Enjoy your look into the ancient past. I particularly like the images of the stinger.

6. A small piece of Baltic amber with a Millipede, Diplopoda, Julidae.

7. A very rare piece - this has a stonefly in it. Stoneflies are rare in amber. The larvae form of a stonefly are even harder to find. Here is the nymph form of a stonefly, Perlidae. A lovely piece of Baltic amber, this one is polished on only two sides which shows the stonefly very well.

13. What a piece of amber, long, thin, this has it all. The star attraction is a large pseudoscorpion with the pincers out, ready for a fight. the entire piece has a cloudy layer, but is easily observed from the top. It has fungus gnats, moth flies and midges. Every time I look at this, I see something else. This is loaded and great fun to look at.

14. This is the rare lace bug, it is a true bug, Heteroptera, Tingidae: Aradidae - Aradus sp. These are just beautiful flat bugs, they get their name from the flatness of their body. These are rarely seen in Baltic or Dominican amber.

15. This is a mayfly, Ephemeroptera. Mayfly adults (such as this adult male) have life spans of no more than a few days. On the transition from nymph to adult, they fly from the surface of the water for mating, but do not feed. They complete the mating process and die with in a day or two. Mayflies in any amber are very rarely found . This is a beautiful animal and so seldom seen. Life of only a day or two.............
We even have another Mayfly on the next page (hard to believe, but it is true.)

16. Nice clear piece, that has a nymph of a long-horned Orthoptera, Ensifera (cricket). On this type, the jumping muscle is located on the swollen femur. These can make a sound by rubbing the two stridulating organs located at the base of the front wings.

17. This is not for everyone. It is a small piece and the animal inside is very small. But hold on to your hats, this is an Annelida. It really is. Please, again, this is for the serious collector.

18. Great looking caddis fly, Trichoptera. There is a lot of organic debris, but the caddis fly is still very easily seen.

19. Finally we found a perfect specimen of a fungus gnat (Diptera, Nematocera: Mycetophilidae that has eggs. She died 45 million years struggling to get out of the stinky resin and while doing so, laid a few dozen eggs in the resin as it flowed over her. Very unusual and very rare to find a piece like this. The eggs are spectacular - take a look at them and you will agree.

21. A very rare piece of the Cypress family, Cupressaceae, a Thuites twig. Twigs are seldom found in Baltic amber since they decay so rapidly. This particular piece has a very nice twig - almost an inch long. Very nice, very impressive for a collection.

27. I like this one, even if it is small. There is a fly, Diptera: Brachycera, Empididae, known as a dance fly.

28. Although I am not 100% sure about this, I do think it is a froghopper (spittlebug). Superfamily Cercopoidea do not have any veins visible in the clavus and are extremely rare in Baltic amber. This is a perfectly shaped piece with a large froghopper.
