2 - BALTIC AMBER
This
page is different from the other pages. Please note that while all the
other pages have amber from the Dominican Republic, this page has amber
from the Baltic area. Bottom line, everything on this page is Baltic
amber. Take a look at the bottom of this page - there are some
very new specials.
We now have a new page of weekly Baltic amber specials - real

An unusual looking fly in a very clear piece of amber. I suspect this might be a rare fly, but am not sure.

You do not see scorpion flies very often in amber. Here is a large one, Mecoptera, Bittacidae, genus Bittacus. You can easily see just about all of the body and wings. A very nice specimen.
It is neat to see the chewing parts at the end of long snout. Looks like there is part of a leaf and also a crane fly, Tipulidae. Good sized piece, 21.6 grams. Scanned

Almost sound trite when I say a "spider and a fly". This
is a large piece of Baltic amber. The fly is large while the spider
is small.

Pretty good sized
piece of amber. This
has a rough side (means
many bumps - polished of course). There is a
single moth (I think) in an otherwise
'busy' piece of amber. This has a very good price on it.

33. This is a great
piece. A beauty of a fly, diptera, Brachycera. Good detail in this fly. Strange shape, but very nice piece.

A large piece of amber with character. It has a long legged fly,
Diptera, Dolichopodidae that has a slight bit of white material
on the body. This is just one of those pieces that has class.

35. This is an interesting piece. Cut square and very clear this piece of amber contains a single, small barklouse, Psocoptera. This is not a show piece but a piece for a collection.

A nymph of a long
horned orthopterans (Ensifera). This is a beaut of a cricket
nymph. Complete and a great
amount of detail can be seen. These are forest
dwellers that scale
trees in search of insect prey. This is a fine
piece.

A really cool piece of amber. This is only a medium sized piece (see scanned image) but it has the remains of a spider web inside it. Very unique and rather rare to find such a piece.

38.This clear piece of amber contains a single, very nice, click beetle, Coleoptera, Elateridae. Click beetles are wood-boring beetles, they are uncommon in Baltic and rare in Dominican ambers. When it finds itself upside down, it propels itself into the air with an audible click.

41. A bunch of midges and gnats. The midges are true midges, Chironomid.
The amber is long and tubular. Rather a sharp piece, it has more than
you think.

Here is a large piece that has so much inside, I would call it a
zoo. I see something new each time I look at it. It has all types
of gnats, midges, flies - you name it, it has it. This one is loads
of fun.

43. Here is a cool piece. There is a dark winged fungus gnat, Diptera, Sciaridae - but the neat thing about this piece is the pincer from a pseudoscorpion - just plain cool.

There is a lot here. A spider, Araneae, a midge, a small fly, couple ants, a beetle and more. Each time I look at it, something else pops out. Good sized, 2.5 inches and about 24 grams.

45. Here is a pseudoscorpion, Pseudoscorpiondiae. The critter is small, but easily seen. Pseudoscorpions are rare in any amber, particularly in Baltic amber. Also in this amber is a springtail, Collembola and 2 female worker ants, Hymenoptera, Formicidae.

Here it is - a mosquito, Diptera, Culicidae. These are so hard to find in Baltic amber.
Mosquito's are not attracted to the resin as many other animals are,
remember the mosquito's are attracted to CO2 and warmth. To find
one in amber is VERY rare. So rare that anything like this commands
a very strong price. You might no ever see one again.

Protective case of the Trichoptera
larva. If you
look attentively you can
see the head of the
larva which tries
to get off the cover. That is my best
guess - on the other hand it could
be a larvae in a larvae
case (Lepidoptera) - but I do not think so.
