Dominican Republic Blue Amber

Blue amber is rare, unusual and normally very expensive.

Blue amber is not blue exactly if one looks directly at it. The blue is best seen with incident light coming from behind the observer. All of this amber has a beautiful blue sheen when the light is right! Notice from the sample pictures, that the entire piece is not completely polished. This is because the blue comes through much better if a portion of the amber is left unpolished. You will not commonly find blue amber on the market, it is not very common. As you look at the pictures, remember that the blue color does not show up well in these pictures (depends upon how the sun hits the amber).

Note: We have just returned from the Dominican Republic (August) - and let me tell you, blue is getting VERY hard to find. In an unusual turn of events, the blue amber that is in most demand (and costing 10 to 12 dollars per gram WHOLESALE) is a very 'different' blue. Almost a yellow amber with a 'haze' of blue in the sun. This is not the dark blue color many of us have come to know, but the barest hint of blue in a sea of yellow. All types of blue are getting harder and harder to find and thus to purchase. Prices are still good, but I expect a price increase soon.

SOLD #1 #1 This is 5 gram piece that is similar to the note above. It is primarily yellow with a small haze of blue in the light. Polished on all sides but the bottom, this would make an interesting pendant.

Large, thinnish and very uniform, this piece can be used as a show piece or is could be cut up in many, many smaller blue amber pieces. There is so much potential to this one. #36. We have saved the best for last. This is a unique piece. Bottom line, this is like looking into a very clear pond. It does have the very slightest of blue iridescence around the edges. As you probably know, most amber is yellow, often translucent. This on the other hand is clear with yellow and blue hints. You could almost put a fishing line in and get a bite. It is just amazing. 26.4 grams of wonderful clear Dominican amber. It is about 2.5 x 1.5 x .5 inches.
