Colombian Copal
How old is Colombian
Copal? The age of Colombian (South America) copal still remains an open
question. In fact in some papers you can find uncertain "Tertiary"
age (see for example the table in Langenheim's review, American Scientist,
78:16-24, 1990), or in other papers also Pliocene-Pleistocene;
accurate determinations made by means of 14C revealed that Colombian
copal from the region of Santander is in the order of just 200 years
old (Clifford et al., Org. Geochemistry, 27:449-464, 1997), practically
recent resin. There are others who feel that certain Colombian copals
are in the terms of many millions of years.
Most of the Colombian
copal that is offered for sale is from the Andes Mountains in South
Amberica. It could be up to 16 million years old. Since I have not had
it tested for time, I cannot conclusively say the age. If there is something
in particular that you are looking for but cannot find it on this page,
let us know, we probably have
it!
A note
for those interesting in large quantities. We have large quantities
of Colombia copal for sale. Example prices range from $620 per kilogram
to about $1100 (polished with good quality insects.) We can supply lots
up to 8 kilograms. Let us know
what you want.

1.
Neat piece, in fact beautiful piece. This is very clear with
what may have been roots going through. Has 2 bubbles also.
Flat on the bottom, perfect for a "small" desk ornament.
A sure conversation starter.

2.
Long piece, about 4 inches with some nice
animals. It has beautiful winged
termite, along with some
wings and no termites, a large
ant and a few other
animals scattered. You
will like this one.

3. This
has a large
bee near the
middle and at the end of the piece are a big
bunch of wings from winged
termites. It is a really cool bunch of wings. The piece
is a bit
bigger than 3 x 1 inch.

4.
A fairly large piece, thin but large. I will state like it is
- it appears that this has 2 masses of nematodes (round worms).
One the logical side, I do not think so, but it certainly looks
like it. The shape and size are correct, but there is something
in me that says, no way. What do you think? There is a real
nice cricket, lots of gnats, midges, a wasp, a beetle, a true
bug even part of a leaf - quite a bit here.

5. Here it is - the thing you never s ee
in copal
or amber. This contains a small
lizard. Really. This looks like a
baby lizard, I cannot ID it, but is is only half
an inch or so. Obscuredon
the top side, easier to see on the bottom side. The
lizard is in particularly
good shape. Lots of insects and other animals around
the lizard and throughout the piece. There is an ant,
some midges and what appears to be a very
large beetle. Vertebrates in copal are rare. Usually a
vertebrate can pull itself away from the sticky
resin where a small flying insect cannot. So the ones
that end up in copal/amber are either weakened and compromised
or very small. This one is small (but perfect). We have priced
this specimen very low - way below market value. This will
be the crown in any collection.

6. There is a lot here. Among other
things, a spider,
a large
moth, gnats, midges, files - quite a lot. This is fun
to look at, rather clear and things are easily seen. Also
has some plant material - rather like selaginella.

You know, each piece is special and this is no exception.
It really does look like there are mammalian hairs on one
side of this copal! One side of me says they taper wrong and
the other says they look perfect! I just do not know for sure.
You be the judge. There is also a lot of other stuff, a roach,
a spider, and a bunch of flies. Half of the piece (fairly
large) is occluded with some unknown layer of stuff. The other
side is good.

8.
Large and
flat piece of copal.
This has just
about everything you can think of. Lots of fun to look at
- even has plants material. Lots
of files, gnats and
others to keep anyone busy for a long time. This even has
an unknown!

You will fall in love with this right away. There are
termite wings and a winged termite also worker
termites (looks like one is carrying
another, fungus gnats, midges,
a good
fly and who knows what
else when you look carefully.

10.
Here is the
piece. You will never find a cooler
piece than this. Look
at the image - looks like
an ant, eh? Now count the legs - this
is a spider, Araneae. It is an ant
mimic spider. Talk about evolution at its best. This spider
has evolved to look like an ant so it can
pass itself off and eat what it looks like. The best example
of animal mimicry that I have ever seen. This is one for everyone's
collection.

11. Good sized piece of Colombian
copal. This contains a Phasmid, (walking stick) near one
side. It weighs 18.2 grams. The copal is very clear and light
yellow. There are 2 other gnats and some organic debris here.
The piece is nice and the specimen is rare.

Million
year old water? Who knows? Just a great
piece - no insects but this has a beauty of its own. Attractive,
and a 'wanna-be'.

If you like termites, look no further. Not only that, but
the detail on these animals is fantastic. Clear copal, lots
of termites, just plain fun. There are some great air bubbles
in bubbles.

What a piece of copal. The fungus gnat shows wonderful patterns
on the wings (very unusual). This has a large planthopper, a
few ants, midges and flies. Lots here to keep anyone interested
- and the piece is big. Not as clear as some of the others,
but what it has inside makes up for it.

Large and very
clear. This is a great
piece. Has a small curve
to it, and oh what bugs! There are midges, files, gnats, just
a great
piece of copal.

16.
Nice worker termite near the middle, along with a host of others,
such as a fly and gnats. The piece reminds me of a 50 cent piece
(US money) and is a good buy.

17.
What a great piece. Perfectly clear yellow with a centrally
placed
Bryophyte. There are
5 bees,
Hymenoptera and lots of gnats, Diptera. There is a nice
winged
termite, Hymenoptera. On one side
a large spider, Araneida! This piece just has a lot all
over. Over on the side is what looks like an
unknown egg case. Talking about eggs, here is something
that you seldom see: a gnat
laying eggs as
she died in the sticky resin, very rare!
There is even an
ant.

This is a very piece of copal. It has some of the strangest
things I've ever seen. While there are many, many
termites, gnats, midges and ants (all of which are partly
obscured by air bubbles) there are the strangest
plant (?) formations! I cannot exactly figure them out,
especially the big
one with
radiating spokes. There is one thing I can make out and
am sure about - this has hair
- mammalian
hair! That is practically
unheard of. Some animals must have brushed
up against the sticky resin and lost a few
hairs. This is very rare and very valuable. This piece even
has a weevil, Superfamily Curculionoidea:
Cossoninae.

A wasp, a possible Homopteran and a gnat. The copal is very
clear and very attractive. Beautiful piece, great for a collection
- with a an even better price.

Nice piece with many dozens of dance flies. Also has a good
sized planthopper and a female worker ant (sterile). Good
price on this beauty.

Ever hold something
in your hand and just think,
wow. This is one of those. Very
clear with great air
bubbles and a beautiful number of worker
termites. Just a lovely piece that stirs the imagination
when you look at it.

Reminds me a of large, clear
rock. This has a bunch
of tropical bees, just a nice piece of have. It has a
neat
feel to hold it in your hand also.

This piece is as impressive
as they get. Are you looking for something to set
on your desk to impress folks? This will
do it! Large, almost 5 inches containing a perfect leaf,
an extremely large
bee (some small ones also), beetles
such as a platypodidae
beetle, a spider
(large one at that), gnats
of all types, flies
- you name it, this piece has it. Most of the animals in this
copal are easily seen without a microscope. All I think of
when I see this piece is "perfect - large - impressive",
you will also. This
is a capstone piece for your collection.

Termite wings, an unknown ball of fuzz and some ancient air
bubbles. Yes, there are some other insects, but they are hard
to see. Nice shape and design to this piece.

Big - this
it. The copal is very
clear and the animals are easy to see. Almost dead center
is a large weevil that
has termites and flies
all around it. This is an impressive
piece of copal.

Some pieces are just hard to describe. This is large, long
and thick and has so much in it, it would take you a long
time to see it all. There are
plant parts, midges, gnats, beetles, flies and a ton of
stuff that I do not know. This is a fun piece.
