Baltic Damselfly Odonata
Members of this order are very rare in amber. Damselflies are similar to mayflies in having aquatic nymphs, but the adults, which are relatively long lived (3 - 8 weeks), do not swarm. This lack of swarming, their
larger size, and their stronger flying abilities may account for the rarity of dragonflies and dmaselflies in amber. Both adults and nymphs are predaceous on a variety of invertebrates, mostly arthropods. The final molt occurs after the nymph has crawled out on land.
This particular piece is perfect (period). The wings are whole, the body is in beautiful shape and the entire insect is fairly large and easy to see. Damselflies are so rare, you can count the number on one hand. This is probably the finest specimen in the world. The classification goes as follows:
Animalia Phylum
Arthropoda Class
Insecta Order
Odonata Superfamily
Coenagrionoidea Family
Coenagrionidae Genus
Africallagma Species rubristigma (Schmidt, 1954)
This will take your breath away when you look at the pictures.
Rare, perfect, unbelievable are the words that come to mind. We
invite you to look carefully at the pictures, you are in for a treat.
