Field Guide For Insects:
Identification in Dominican Amber
Page 2

Ants

Order: Hymenoptera

Family: Formicidae

Characteristics: Ants and wasps can sometimes be difficult to identify. Between the thorax and adbomen, the ants have one or two nodes (humps), many times very prominent and sometimes not very obvious. (The nodes are anatomically the first anterior parts of the abdomen.) Worker ants have antennae that are usually very strongly elbowed, and the first segment is much longer than the others. The winged ants are males and the worker ants are ususally sterile females.

Behavior: Ants are common in Dominican amber. They are social animals and often found in large numbers. Over the millions of years, ants do not seem to have changed a lot.
