Bark Beetle

Bark Beetles are also called ambrosia beetles and flat footed beetles.

Order: Coleoptera

Family: Platypodidae

Characteristics: The body of these animals is cylindrical. The head may have a "shovel" quality to it and the rear end can look like a broken twig. The feet are not flat. It looks like the body has three parts, the head, a short chest (thorax) and an elongated end part.

Behavior: These beetles dug holes in the Hymenaea trees. They used the shape of their body to push the wood bits out of the way. This 'plug' of wood shavings can often be found in amber from the beetles!
