Field Guide For Insects:
Identification in Dominican Amber

Termites

Order: Isoptera

Family: Many

Characteristics: Generally there are two types, winged and no wings. The workers and soldiers are not winged while the mating males are winged. The winged termites are slightly more common. Both wings are large and look similar. Non winged workers often have a large head (wider than their thorax). It is common to see large bubbles emanating from the workers bodies. The bubbles were methane from the bacteria in their gut. Winged termites are more tubular in shape with very distinctive, large wings.

Behavior: Termites are also common in Dominican amber. They, like the ants are social animals and often found in large numbers. The wood that termites eat is digested by the bacteria and protozoans in thier gut, not by the termites themselves!
