Fungus Gnat

Order: Diptera

Family: Mycetophilidae

Characteristics: One pair of rounded wings on this small insect. The legs are long and the antennae are also long. While they are told apart often by the venation in the wings, you might recognize them as the small gnats that fly in groups around clear spaces such as driveways.

Behavior: Since leaves and dead wood are often decomposed by fungus, as the name implies this gnat feeds on the fungus that decays leaves and wood.
