Black Scavenger Flies

Order: Diptera

Family: Scatopsidae

Characteristics: These are small insects with rounded wings that often have a dark vein on one edge of the wing. The head is small and the body may show some scales on the abdomen (see pictures). The antennae are small.

Behavior: These are often found in large swarms, so there may be more than one. As the family name implies, they are often found around decaying waste material. They have a not-so-nice secondary name of 'shit flies'. When a mating insects are found in amber, chances are they are the black scavenger flies.
