I know you are going to think this impossible. But there is a tuft of hair in this specimen of amber. Not only is it practically impossible to find hair in amber, but it is impossible to find it for sale! This is an extremely rare and valuable piece of amber. Now what type of hair, I do not know. But I can tell you this: the hair is about 25 million year old, and was found in the Dominican Republic near the La Toca mines..

I wonder what the animal was and how it lost its hair. I can imagine a tree dweller getting some hiar caught in the resin and having it yanked out as it moved from the one place to another. This specimen is small, only about 1 cm x .5cm. This is the crowning glory to any large collection of amber. I just cannot impress upon you stongly enough how rare this is!

There is also a female Ceratopogonid in the hair mass. I do not feel it has anything to do with the hiar, other than to be trapped at the same time the hair was caught. This is so unusual a specimen that if you are a muesum or institution of higher learning and use a PO for the purchase of this amber, you will receive a 20% discount. The price will not be discounted for a regular collectors. It is such a good find that I want it to go to a museum or college. Scanned Image!
