Kauri Gum

Many folks want a piece to amber (or gum) to put on a desk, bookcase of coffee table so others can see some of their collection easily. Most folks do not want to pay an arm and a leg to do so. Here it is - without the arm and leg. We have a VERY large chunk of Kauri gum (9.5 pounds - about 6 x 7 x 11 inches) that we picked up at a very reasonable price and thus we pass this on to you.

Kauri gum is from a tree in the family Araucariaceae, genus Agathis. This is a small family of trees found in the northern part of New Zealand (Agathis australis) and Queensland (Agathis palmerstonii and Agathis robusta). It has been found also in Indonesia.

Most of the recent Kauri gum is 10,000 to 40,000 years old. The fossil gum has been dated from coal seams to be 43 million years old. The Kauri gum (copal) that is offered for sale is not fossil gum, but only 30 or 40,000 years old. As you probably know, Kauri gum is almost impossible to find, and even harder to find for sale! The piece is large as you can see. It is not polished. Although I would not say that a bright sheen is seen throughout the piece, it certainly has it's own glow to it. 

You will never find a larger piece of Kauri Gum for your collection - anywhere near this price. This is the Granddaddy of all! We will guarantee you that this is as good as we describe it to be.

Postage for amber will usually cost $5.35 (USD Priority Mail in the USA) or 1st class mail anywhere in the world. There may be exceptions to this. We will get your sample to you as soon as possible (usually mailed the same day or at worst, the next day). U.S. orders go out by Priority Mail, overseas as Air Mail. Books are normally mailed "Media Mail", unless they are light, in which case they are mailed first class. Overseas books are air mail unless the weight is prohibitive, in which case you will have the option of surface (ship) or paying a bit extra for air mail. All prices are in U.S. dollars.
