Real Scorpion in Amber If you are like me, I just do not have an extra $10,000.00 to $25,000.00 for a complete scorpion. They have always been above what I could spend. Well, here is one that will fit your budget. It is a real scorpion in Dominican amber.
The amber is about an inch long, rather cloudy in spots which makes viewing a bit more challenging. One claw (scorpion's right) is missing from a break in the amber. The body is difficult to see because of cloudiness. Bottom line is, you will never find a scorpion in amber at this price. The price is great, the scorpion is fair. We do not want to sugar coat this piece for you, just because the price makes it affordable, it is still missing the right claw!
Scorpions in amber are extremely rare and command the very highest of prices. This is a great piece for someone's collection. It is a good piece and lots of fun to show others. You will not go wrong with this price. There are a few female work ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) and a fungus gnat (Diptera, Mycetophilidae) off to the side. In fact the fungus gnat is near the left claw. This scorpion was found at the La Toca mines, near Santiago in the Dominican Republic. It is a full inch long (almost all complete specimens at 1/2 inch or less.) This scorpion died in a defensive position (tail coiled and ready to strike, claw open) and it's decaying body brought out numerous flies seen 'feeding' on it and also ants on the reverse side; much like the giant complete lizard found at these miens a decade ago. The body is well preserved, color markings can be seen, but it is preserved in cloudy amber infiltrated with many small cracks. It is visually most impressive sitting in its cotton embedded box where natural light brings out the body best. If this was a scorpion in crystal clear amber with its other arm, it would be easily worth over $20,000.00. The only complete 1/2 inch scorpion found last year was at Denver for $18,000.00, perfectly preserved in crystal amber. This will be the only time a large scorpion will be found at this low price. Here are a series of images of the amber: Picture
