Field Guide For Insects:
Identification in Dominican Amber

Midges

Order: Diptera

Family: Ceratopongonidia and Secidomyiidia

Characteristics: The Biting midge and Gall midge are both fairly common in Dominican amber. They both are small insects. The Biting midge has a short fat body with mouthparts that are often pointing downward. The one pair of wings are rounded. As the name implies, they are blood sucking. The Gall midges are similair to the Biting midges but with long antennae with segments. There is another type of midge called the non-biting midge which you probably will not see.

Behavior: These are often found in large swarms. It is thought that they were attracted to the resin because of the resin's odor. Since the are so small (often needing a microscope to observe) they were easily trapped and mummified in the resin.
