Field Guide For Insects:
Identification in Dominican Amber

Wasps

Order: Hymenoptera

Family: Many

Characteristics: Wasps are often mistaken for ants and vise versa. Most wasps do have a constriction between the two body parts, with no 'bumps' - ants can have 1 or 2 bumps (nodes.) Thjey have two pair of wings, with the front ones larger. They can be difficult to identify. Rule of thumb, if there is a constriction between the thorax and abdomen with no bumps, it is a wasp.

Behavior: Sawflies, ants, bees and waps are all in the fmaily Hymenoptera. Most people think of wasps as large, while most of the wasps in Dominican amber are small, do not let size fool you. Wasps are social animals. Some are parastic, some are solitary.
