You won't believe this one! In Florida and other 'tropical climates' most folks have seen the common lizards that scoot around bush to bush. These Anoles have been around a long time. At least 20 million years. Here is one. The amber specimen contains that head of a lizard (I suspect an Anole sp.). I have a picture of the jaw from below. Not only does this piece have the head, but it also has the bones of the forelegs (I assume they are the humerous, radius and ulna - they could be the fenur, tibia and fibula). There is still some tissue on it. You can even see the metacarpals. I can't tell you how rare this is. It just doesn't happen very often!!! Remember we have a 100% guarentee on what we sell - this is as good as they get. The specimen is not large ( see photograph). On that photograph, number 1 (humerus) is about 6 mm in length, number 2 the radius and ulna is about 4 mm in length, number 3 the head is 5 mm in length and number 4 the phalanges are about 2 mm in length. Scanned Image!
The picture on the left shows the humerus with the attaching radius and ulna (arm) while the image on the right is taken from the bottom of the jaw. If this specimen is the one for you then just click on this price............. Update: This lizard has ended up at the Smithsonian Institution. Here is part of a note I received from them: I'm excited to have the specimen in my hands, because an initial (rather cursory) examination suggests to me that it is something new. The only two Dominican amber anoles that have been studied to date both appear to be green anoles (relatives of Anolis chlorocyanus), but the new specimen appears to be something different. My preliminary guess is that it is a trunk anole related to Anolis distichus. Of course, it will takes months of additional study to figure this out more definitively.
An enlargement of the smaller picture above this one. You can see the eye on the bottom side of the image. I wonder what happened to the rest of the body?
